I’m not really one for resolutions, but I have been thinking about my writing and goals, and come to some decisions.
First up, there’s no new short today. I have a couple of standalone chapters of a large project that I could post, but they’re rough drafts that very clearly need work and refinement.
The reason there’s no new short today is that I’ve let my discipline slide quite a bit in December. I spent fully half the month traveling and visiting family. While I did bring my writing stuff with me, I didn’t really do any actual writing because I was distracted and it didn’t feel like the right time (and, I’ll admit, having only one subscriber makes it tempting to let my deadlines slide because I don’t have to worry about disappointing or being accountable to lots of people).
I know from past experience, though, that the most important part of feeling inspired and that it’s the right time to write is just plain habit and work. So while I let it get away from me in December, I’ve decided – resolved, you might say – to set myself a more strict schedule than I usually do, and get things going again.
The good news is that while I haven’t been writing much fiction, I have been reading a bunch of it and jotting down notes. The current project is currently clocking at forty-seven thousand words and is nowhere close to half done, maybe not even a third – but I’ve got a blueprint and notes. I’ll be splitting my focus a bit between that and continuing to keep up with two monthly short stories.
